You’ve probably heard of virtual reality headsets. What you might not know is that there are several different types and they all work in slightly different ways. The two most popular types, Google Cardboard and Samsung Gear VR, both give you a 3D experience using your smartphone as the screen. But what do these devices actually look like? Let’s take a closer look at each one:
Google Cardboard:
This kit lets anyone turn their phone into an affordable headset with just some cardboard, lenses and Velcro (see picture). It works by placing your phone inside the box so it becomes the display for the device. You can then watch anything on YouTube or play games or go on tours – and everything will be in 3D. The headset is made from cardboard, but it’s very well designed so you can easily use the trackpad on the side of your phone to navigate around whatever content you’re viewing. This product is completely free and doesn’t require any downloads or additional apps (unless of course you want more 3D virtual reality experiences).
Samsung Gear VR:
This type of 3D headset is more expensive than the Google Cardboard, but it offers a better VR experience. It’s powered by Oculus VR technology, so you can expect an immersive virtual reality environment with high-quality graphics. The Gear VR has its own built-in touchpad on the side to let you navigate through your content. It also has a back button and volume key on the top of it for additional control options, while there’s even an option to connect headphones if you want to get your audio fix too. You can also connect this device to Bluetooth controllers or gamepads (which are sold separately). This is possible because the device uses motion sensors that track your head movements, letting you move around in the virtual world. The Gear VR is currently compatible with Samsung’s Galaxy S6 and S7 series as well as the Note 5, but it needs to be plugged into a Samsung smartphone via USB for power before you can use it.
Lenovo Star Wars Headset:
This headset works with the same technology as the Gear VR, but it comes at a much cheaper price. It’s compatible with smartphones that have screens matching 4 to 5.7 inches. And thanks to its lightweight nature, this kit is perfect for watching movies or browsing the web on your smartphone in 3D. Google Cardboard is very simple in comparison, but it only works with Android. The Star Wars headset also has a comfortable cushion for your face to make the experience even more enjoyable. There’s even an additional USB port underneath (which can be used for power or connecting headphones). You can get this kit on Windows-based PCs if you want to use it to play games, but unfortunately you have to buy an additional 3D joystick separately.
Kartina TV VR Headset:
This kit is all about watching movies and other content on the go. It’s not designed for virtual reality gaming nor does it require a smartphone because it has its own built-in screen. The interface is simple and easy to use, with a home button below the screen for getting back to your previous content. The headset only works with Android TV devices, which can be plugged into a TV or projector. It’s also compatible with Google Play Movies and TV, Roku and Plex media players as well as several websites that offer 3D video streaming. You can use this kit to watch anything on YouTube and it has a microSD card slot for your favorite content (up to 128GB). The headset even has a built-in speaker and microphone.
